The Serial Short-Reach 40Gb Transponder Working Group ( SSR-40 ) is an industry collaboration to provide a cost-effective 40Gb serial transponder for short-reach (<2km) applications. The SSR-40 Group promotes a serial solution since they believe that many carriers prefer serial solutions to inverse-multiplexing solutions. Another objective of the SSR-40 Group is to increase the existing market for 40Gb components by focusing industry activities in the 40Gb area. In the long run these activities are supposed to increase production numbers and thus reduce costs for 40Gb components. According to the SSR-40 Group the solution promoted by X40 Group will not bring forward cost reduction for 40Gb components due to sticking to the established 10Gb components.
